Kintyre’s top dairy farmers were rewarded when the area’s Holstein and Ayrshire breeders clubs held their joint annual heifer competition.
There was some excellent stock on show during the Friday January 17 contest, with a crowd of about 25 following the route around the participating farms – Kilkeddan, Clochkeil, Darlochan, West Backs, East Drumlemble, Trodigal, Machrihanish, Coledrain and Gartvaigh.
In the evening, about 36 members of both clubs enjoyed dinner at Campbeltown’s Argyll Arms Hotel before the prizegiving, during which judge Malcolm Ronald provided his reasons for picking his individuals on each farm.
Machrihanish and Kilkeddan cleared up, each winning two of the four prizes up for grabs.
Heifer team: 1 Machrihanish, 2 Kilkeddan, 3 West Backs.
Best individual heifer: 1 Machrihanish, 2 Kilkeddan, 3 Darlochan.
Best progeny group: 1 Kilkeddan, 2 West Backs, 3 West Trodigal.
Best dam and daughter: 1 Kilkeddan, 2 Machrihanish, 3 West Backs.
“Thanks to all who took part and had a hand in organising the event,” said a spokesperson. “And a special thanks to Malcolm Ronald who had the difficult job of being judge for the day.”
