Festive spirit flowed into the new year when the Tarbert Senior Citizens held its annual Christmas dinner at Tarbert Village Hall on Friday January 17.
Around 80 seniors attended the four-course meal, which included turkey and trimmings prepared by two local chefs, as well as musical entertainment from Davy Hay and Izzy Dunn. Martin Jeffries presided over the evening’s action as master of ceremonies.
While the dinner provided a cure to the January weather, it also served as a platform to announce the group’s annual Citizen of the Year award. This year the award was given to Mary Galloway.
A teacher of 30 years, including 25 teaching PE at Cowal primary schools, Mary is well known locally for her philanthropic work.
Amongst her many achievements are running the Wee Cake Shed by her house, through which her baking has raised funds for the Tarbert church clock repair and Beatson Cancer Charity.
She also climbed to Everest Base Camp, which led to a large donation to the Befrienders network.
A keen gardener who also helps her own family with childcare, Mary keeps a busy schedule.
Unable to attend the dinner in person, she was given her award by Martin Jeffries outside the Wee Cake Shed.
The Senior Citizens Annual Christmas Dinner Committee would like to thank all those who helped make the event possible, including the evening’s staff and volunteers, Tarbert Co-op for its continued support, the Tarbert Village Hall committee for the venue, Tarbert Fire Brigade, and Stonefield Castle Hotel for supplying the turkey and trimmings.
