Running a café surrounded by Scotland’s most beautiful scenery is many people’s idea of romantic perfection.
Imagining an idyllic location in which one can serve cakes and coffee to a friendly community of regulars and visitors is a vision that can fill a heart with warmth.
News that the Lochaline Community Hub in Morvern is seeking a new tenant for its café may therefore pique the interest of many a dreamer.
Owned by the Morvern Community Development Company (MCDC) and managed by its Morvern Community Trading Company (MCTC), the hub - which opened in 2021 - is aiming to have a new café operator in house in April or May.
“It’s a stunning setting, a stunning environment, stunning views,” says Lilia Dobrokhodova, MCDC Project Officer and Company Secretary. “And we are pretty relaxed and supportive as a company. Happy to help out, and I think the new tenant will have support from the community.”
The opportunity to run the café comes because current operator Annemie Shanks is choosing to step back from her role at the end of March. The hub is hoping that the café’s new face will continue the ‘outstanding quality’ Annemie has provided in her cakes, teas, light lunches, and themed sit-down meals, but is leaving the broader ideas to the new person or team.
“We don’t really stipulate how the café is run,” says Lilia. “We just want to see it open and serving good food to the community.”
While a business plan is part of the application, experience in café management is not a prerequisite, Lilia says, noting that Annemie arrived having previously worked in, but not overseen, a café.
Additionally, applicants do not need to currently reside in Morvern, and Lilia keenly points to the area’s school, medical centre, and local shops as attractions to newcomers wishing to step into a focal point of Lochaline life.
“It’s a nice place, with a lifestyle to be envious of,” Lilia adds, in words sure to appeal to prospective candidates.
Anyone interested in learning more about taking on the Lochaline Community Hub café tenancy, including details of the lease agreement and site equipment, should contact MCTC at development@morvern.org.
The deadline for proposals is Sunday March 31.
