Love – and a few other emotions – were in the air when Campbeltown Bowling Club hosted a Mr and Mrs quiz night last Saturday.
Four couples, plus one surprise mystery duo, signed up to answer questions about each other, including their likes, dislikes and other personal information, with the goal of finding out who knew each other best.
In turns, one half of each couple was removed from the room and kept entertained by Archie Millar while the other was asked five questions by MC John Armour, before they were reunited to reveal their answers.
They then swapped places, while the other took their turn to answer five questions, meaning there was a total of 10 points up for grabs for each couple.
The questions, compiled by John and Archie, were interesting and varied, with some generic and others catered to the specific couples.
There were also several local questions, including their favourite section of the Courier, Argyll FM radio show and Kintyre beach, as well as most missed Campbeltown pubs and shops that have closed down over the years.
The first to take on the challenge were Fiona and Robert Hendrie, who were unlucky in love on the night, only managing to score four points despite being the second longest married couple at 33 years.
Next up were Margaret and Billy Rankin, whose 57-year marriage was the longest of the evening, and who fared a bit better, ending up with six points.
Betty and Neil McLellan, married for 20 years, were next in the hot seat, scoring an impressive seven points to take them into first place.
The fourth couple were Ina and Gavin Semple, who are 27 years married and managed to equal Betty and Neil’s score of seven, putting them in joint top spot.
With excitement over the identity of the mystery couple building throughout the quiz, it was finally revealed to be the bowling club’s current president, Robert “Berta” Coffield, who was transformed into “Bertha” for the evening, alongside vice president Archie Johnston.
The “couple” did surprisingly well, perhaps thanks to spending so much time together at the club and on bowling trips, scoring 6.5, just half a point away from sharing the top spot with the two other couples, and putting them in third place over all.
With two couples tied, it was decided that instead of putting them through any further questions – and possibly risk causing any divorces – Betty and Neil, and Ina and Gavin would be crowned joint winners.
The evening concluded with an all-night disco, thanks to John and Archie, who moved on to the decks to play a selection of tunes to get people onto the dance floor.
“We had a great night at our Mr and Mrs event,” said a spokesperson for the bowling club. “Well done to joint winners Neil and Betty McLellan and Gavin and Ina Semple, and thanks to our great host John Armour.”
