After recent delays to bin collection due to ’operational issues’ a new bin lorry has arrived on the Isle of Mull.
The 27-ton Dennis truck has arrived to replace an older model which has been moved to Oban.
It is hoped to improve the reliability of the service which in recent months has struggled to consistently complete its routes.
Some residents recently went a whole month without recycling due to operational issues. On an island without access to many shops, a lot of items are ordered online, therefore, cardboard packaging piles up quickly, and with a month of no collection people’s bins were overflowing.
Due to the inherent isolation of islands, it is not feasible for replacement trucks to fill any gaps left by mechanical issues.
Mull also lacks a garage for the trucks, meaning repairs take much longer, so the new vehicle, which will be less likely to break down, is greatly appreciated by local binmen.
On the acquisition, Argyll and Bute council said: “We do our best to put the most up-to-date vehicles to work on our islands, where they negotiate some of the more challenging routes in Argyll and Bute. The new lorry on Mull replaces a 21-plate vehicle, which will be serviced and put to work elsewhere in the area.
“Bin lorries in Argyll and Bute will clock up more mileage, and wear and tear, than counterparts in urban areas to collect the equivalent number of bins. These are highly complex pieces of machinery and our mechanics make six-weekly inspections on all the vehicles.
“When we do have issues with breakdowns, our hard-working staff get things back on schedule as quickly as possible.”
