A number of offers have been put on the table to buy the historic Craignish Parish Church building in Ardfern.
The “B” listed building was put on the market by the Church of Scotland with an asking price of offers over £50,000. January 23 was set as the closing date with a noon deadline, and unsurprisingly with its stunning views over Loch Craignish, the property attracted considerable attention.
While the sellers noted that conversion to a residential property might be possible, this would be “subject to the usual consents”.
The particulars advise that the building, which is no longer used for worship, could meet a number of uses without requiring a change of use planning consent.
These options include transforming it into a creche, nursery, day centre, educational establishment, museum or public library.
The brochure marketing the building said: “It also has potential for a variety of other uses, such as a theatre, cinema or entertainment venue, retail space or community resource subject to obtaining appropriate consents".
The church features a small vestry while the sanctuary is arranged over ground and gallery floor levels. There are separate stone staircases at either side of the sanctuary that provide access to the gallery.
Surrounding grounds are also included in the sale and the building is connected to the area’s mains water and electricity supplies.
The brochure said that offers would be considered by “one or more” church committees, while the Church of Scotland stressed that it was not bound to accept the highest offers it received.
A spokesman for the church added: “We can confirm that the closing date for the sale of Craignish Parish Church in Ardfern has passed and a number of offers were received.
“It would be inappropriate to make any further comment for confidentiality reasons.”
The Church of Scotland is currently selling off dozens of places of worship, manses and offices around the country as congregation numbers continue to fall.
Properties are being sold as part of an ongoing downsizing exercise to ensure the Kirk is “lean and fit for mission in the 21st century".
