Households in and around Lochgilphead are being invited to give a new lease of life to broken appliances and to save these much-loved items from landfill.
On Saturday March 29 the GRAB Trust’s Repair Café is coming to Lochgilphead to resurrect household items that locals had feared might never work again.
Repair guides will be on-hand at the town’s Community Shop on Argyll Street to tackle everything from defunct food processors to broken toys, lights and heaters.
Owners hoping to see their appliances repaired will be able to enjoy hot drinks, biscuits and a chat while they wait.
“The repair café is also an opportunity to meet people who are interested in tinkering, and keeping items in circulation for longer by repairing, sharing and reusing,” ReMake Argyll Project Officer Christina Saunders explained.
“We are thrilled to now be expanding the Mid-Argyll repair community with new repair guides and a new location to the Community Shop, Lochgilphead. We hope that this central location will mean increased accessibility to the surrounding communities and result in even more items being repaired.”
Christine told the Advertiser about Margaret, one of the café’s happy customers who had brought her 30-year-old electric shaver to the café.
Margaret said: “I have used this shaver for the past 30 years to cut my husband’s hair. It has great sentimental value. The repair café was friendly, helpful and chatty. I met friends I hadn’t seen for years and also met some new people. Great job!”
The café’s repair guides Dennis Wardrop and David Hayter have recently undertaken safety training, completing their portable appliance testing (PAT) training; ReMake Argyll hopes soon to be able to offer this service to repair café attendees to ensure the safety of their items when they get them home.
People are invited to drop in to the café between 10.30am and 1pm and will be served in order of arrival.
However, Christine suggests that, to give the repair guides the best possible chance of repairing their item, attendees complete a short booking form available from email remake@grab.org.uk or forms.gle/xNxobsQJRHgxMjpXA
