Apprenticeships and job opportunities within Lochaber’s industrial sector were placed to the fore when Alvance British Aluminium held its third annual Your Future Career in Lochaber (YFCL) event at the Lochaber smelter.
Co-hosted by Jahama Highland Estates, the event on March 5 also saw participation from a range of leading Lochaber industry names, including Mowi Scotland, Ferguson Transport and Shipping, BSW Timber, and UHI
Inverness.
Occurring during Scottish Apprenticeship Week, YFCL allowed participants of all ages to engage with a diverse range of hiring managers and industry experts, who in turn supplied advice on securing experience and roles ranging from engineering and operations to driving and gamekeeping.
The ability of apprenticeships to allow young people to enter professions without taking on student loans was also a key message at the day, which incorporated a tour of the smelter facility.
Tom Uppington, Managing Director of Alvance, said the company was proud of celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week and hoped that local secondary schools would be involved in future editions of YFCL in an effort to keep talent in Lochaber.
“It was fantastic to see parents and carers taking the initiative and attending the event. It was especially encouraging to see individuals returning for a second time, demonstrating their ongoing interest in exploring career opportunities,” he added.
“One standout moment was when a young person made the journey all the way from Kilmarnock just to learn more about apprenticeships.
“This kind of enthusiasm and dedication from young people truly highlights the impact of the event and the strong desire to build a successful future in Lochaber.”
Jacqueline MacLeod, Head of Human Resources at Ferguson Transport and Shipping, said the company had enjoyed being part of an occasion which showed the next generation the career opportunities available in Lochaber.
“It was amazing to see so many young people engaged in their future choices, taking the opportunity to connect with local employers and discuss their aspirations. It was also great to have many people from different backgrounds attending to explore potential career changes, demonstrating that opportunities for growth and development are available for all,” Ms MacLeod said.
