A fundraiser for the family of CalMac worker Grant Paterson, who was injured in an explosion in Rome, has far exceeded its goal.
From East Kilbride but working out of Oban on the MV Clansman, Mr Paterson, 54, is a senior member of the ferry’s catering team.
He was on holiday in Italy when the three storey B&B he was staying in was destroyed in a suspected gas explosion. Investigators have still not determined the cause.
He suffered significant burns to most of his body and has been in the Sant’Eugenio hospital in Rome ever since.
His condition is described as critical but stable and there has been no indication as to when he will be able to return to Scotland.
Once news of his ordeal reached local ears, a JustGiving page was set up to send funds to Paterson’s family, to allow them to visit him in Rome while he recovers.
Support has come from many of his CalMac colleagues and friends.
It was set up with a modest goal of £1,000, which was smashed in a few hours. At the time of writing it sits just above £10,000.
Duncan Mackison, CalMac’s Chief Executive, said: “We were shocked and saddened to hear that our colleague, Grant, has been critically injured on holiday.
“We have reached out to offer our support to Grant’s family, and our thoughts are with Grant and his family at this difficult time.”
