What better way to get stuck in to the Mòd celebrations than to learn some Gaelic? Our reporter Jodie Hagan is joined by the Administrator of Furan Gaelic Centre, Duncan MacNeil, for a lesson in every day words and phrases.
Duncan is part of the Mòd’s local organising committee which has released a phrase-bank of Gaelic words and sayings, many of which are local to Oban and Argyll. The resource covers terms to help local businesses with signage during the Mòd as well as idioms and pleasantries.
Watch our video to find out more about the phrase-bank and be taught some Gaelic by fluent speaker Duncan:
Duncan has great passion for the Gaelic language and as well as delivering lessons and activities in the Furan Gaelic Centre, he also delivers other projects in the community, organises ceilidhs and runs sessions for school pupils across the whole of Argyll.
In the run up to the Mòd he helped provide complimentary Gaelic taster sessions for local businesses. As a native speaker, the Mòd holds great importance for Duncan.
He said: "Oban is really the home of the Royal National Mòd and it is the biggest event in the world to celebrate the Gaelic language and culture.
"It brings so many people from all over the world, both for the competitive element and the fringe element, but also just to meet up with friends and to participate in the many many events. It’s such a beautiful way to celebrate the language."
