Holding CalMac accountable
Ferry services remain a significant concern for island residents and businesses.
With the recent 10 per cent increase in CalMac fares adding to the ongoing frustration over unreliable services, I have continued to push for better investment and accountability.
I recently wrote to Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop, urging her to address these pressing concerns rather than simply increasing costs for hard-pressed islanders.
Improving social housing conditions
Access to safe and well-maintained social housing is a fundamental right, and I am committed to addressing concerns about housing conditions in Tarbert and on Islay.
Many residents have raised valid issues regarding the state of local housing, and I will continue working with relevant authorities to ensure these matters are addressed effectively.
My focus remains on securing better living conditions for tenants and advocating for necessary improvements across Kintyre and the Islands.
Opposing unfair gun licensing fees
One of the key issues I have raised is the government’s proposed increase in gun licensing fees.
This policy would unfairly burden responsible gun owners, particularly in rural areas where firearms are essential for pest control and land management.
I have spoken out against this in the press and will continue to fight for fair policies that respect our way of life.
Assessing flood damage in Port Ellen
Alongside my work on national and regional issues, I have been engaging directly with local communities. This month, I visited Port Ellen to assess flooding damage.
Defending single-sex spaces
Furthermore, I have been vocal in supporting the protection of single-sex spaces, standing up for women and girls in schools and public settings.
This remains a critical issue, and I will not shy away from speaking out, no matter the personal consequences.
The SNP government is now considering updating the School Premises Regulations 1967 to allow for more mixed-sex toilets in schools, reflecting the rise in gender-neutral facilities.
I will continue to advocate for policies that uphold the rights of women and girls, ensuring that single-sex spaces remain protected where necessary.
Challenging harmful rewilding policies
I also strongly oppose the Scottish Government’s ongoing push for rewilding policies that negatively impact farmers and crofters.
I have written to Minister Jim Fairlie demanding that the £25 million intended for farmers and crofters be returned, ensuring that those who work the land receive the support they are due rather than being undermined by damaging ideological policies.
Engaging with local constituents
Finally, I have continued to visit constituents across Kintyre and the Islands, ensuring that your voices are heard. Whether it’s road maintenance, housing concerns, or economic challenges, I remain committed to standing up for our communities.
If there are any issues you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I will always be here to fight for you.
