KT celebrates 20 years
I finally got my Celtic Connections fix last week on the closing weekend of the festival.
KT Tunstall’s show in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall was absolutely stunning as she celebrated the 20th anniversary of her career defining album, Eye to the Telescope.
Backed by Roddy Hart and the Lonesome Fire, I had expected to enjoy the album playthrough because I’ve always loved the album.
Something unexpected, however, was the array of special guests she welcomed onto the stage.
After explaining she wanted to cover some classics that had inspired her as she grew up, she treated us to hits by Bon Jovi, Simple Minds, and then duetted Perfect with Eddi Reader.
Amy Papiranski sang harmonies on Heal Over, then Julie Fowlis appeared for the album’s biggest chart topper – Suddenly I See – to which she quite sensationally added some Puirt a Beul and had the whole concert hall clapping along to Hug Air a Bhonaid Mòr.
A further highlight was the vocal performance of Justin Currie who was the final special guest.
If you enjoy the type of songs that are as relevant today as the day they were written, go and pour yourself a cup of tea, reflect on current affairs, and listen (or re-listen) to Nothing Ever Happens by Del Amitri. Then imagine the emotional effect it had on a full Concert Hall last Thursday night. Just brilliant.
Celtic Connections Cèilidh
Such is the variety of Celtic Connections that you can be listening to rock n roll in the Concert Hall one night, then dancing to a Highland Schottische in the Old Fruitmarket less than 24 hours later – which is exactly what I did!
The All Star Cèilidh Dance was peppered with top players in top form and a full dance floor – with artists from bands such as Skerryvore, Skipinnish, Capercaillie, Tide Lines, Blazin Fiddles, Trail West, Gunna Sound, Beinn Lee, and the Black Rose Cèilidh Band.
Ruairidh Gray was a very entertaining host for the evening and I got a sense of déjà vu from the previous evening when Julie Fowlis appeared as the very special guest! It was a great night.
Upcoming events
Life moves quickly in Glasgow and soon Celtic Connections will be a distant memory – except of course for the shows that will be rescheduled in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.
With a wonderful 2025 festival behind us, I now include dates of some events I have perhaps been neglecting while focussing on the CC shows.
I will include more details of these in the coming weeks.
