Spring time is finally here with longer days, (slightly) warmer temperatures and signs of nature waking up. Often the end of the winter has a mood lifting effect on our wellbeing but if you need a wee boost to put a spring in your step then the Five Ways to Wellbeing this spring can offer just that.
CONNECT WITH OTHERS - spring is a great time to catch up on all those resolutions you made over Christmas to catch up with people in the new year, which fell by the wayside during January and February. A new season is the perfect time to make some new resolutions and meeting up for a coffee, picking up the phone or even writing a letter are great ways to reach out and renew connections with old and new friends.
BE ACTIVE - The earlier sunrise and later sunset mean the days are stretching at both ends so whether you are a morning lark or a night owl there are more opportunities to get outside and get active. Whether it is a gentle stroll, a couch to 5K challenge, taking up cold water dips, getting out on your bike - or skateboard!
TAKE NOTICE - Taking your cue from nature in mindfulness practice in spring is a winning idea. Slow down to watch nature speeding up - whether you take note of the growing daylight hours, the rising temperatures, the migratory passages of birds, the first call of the cuckoo or the first fledglings you spot, the first tadpoles or buzzing bee.
KEEP LEARNING - If your mind is turning to summer holidays then now is the time to start learning a phrase or two in the language of your destination. A new hobby or interest can be picked up at this time of year with quick results - from gardening to foraging for new ingredients for learning some recipes. Treat every day as a school day and challenge yourself to learn something new every single day and to use that knowledge in some practical application too.
GIVE - At this time of year many organisations are looking for volunteers to support their summer activities or fundraising events. Whether you have time, skills or funds to offer your support is always gratefully received. A spring cleaning spree at home can create a whole load of unwanted clothes, furniture or other items to donate to a charity or person in need too.
The five ways to wellbeing are a great framework for finding ways to boost your own mental health and wellbeing. If you find yourself needing support beyond this them please do reach out for help. There is always support in terms of people to listen, people to care and organisations to work with you. Your GP can offer advice and helplines and online support are available 24 hours a day if you need it.
