"Tell me the weight of a snowflake," a sparrow asked a wild dove, writes Reverend Donald McCorkindale, of Ardgour, Morvern and Strontian linked with Acharacle and Ardnamurchan Parish Churches.
"Nothing more than nothing," replied the dove.
"Well, I must tell you a marvellous story," the sparrow said.
"One day I sat on a branch of a fir tree, when it began to snow, not heavily, not a giant blizzard, almost dream-like. Having nothing better to do, I counted the snowflakes settling on the twigs and needles of my branch. Their number was exactly 3, 741, 942. And then another snowflake descended – number 3, 741, 943 dropped on the branch, weighing nothing more than nothing, as you say. The branch broke off."
Having said that, the sparrow flew away, leaving the dove to ponder the story.
She finally said to herself, "Perhaps there is only one voice lacking for peace to come into our world."
Small things matter. A kind word, a gentle gesture, a moment of silence in a noisy world – each carries more weight than we imagine.
We live in times where the problems of the world feel vast and overwhelming. It is easy to think that our small efforts, our prayers, our acts of kindness, our willingness to listen, make little difference. But what if we are that final snowflake? What if our small act of love is the one that tips the balance?
Jesus saw value in the mustard seed, the widow’s mite, the lost sheep. He reminded us that even a cup of cold water given in His name matters. No act of love is wasted, no kindness too small.
So this week, do not underestimate the weight of your words, your actions, your prayers. Perhaps your small kindness, your voice for peace, will be the one that makes all the difference.
