Bob MacIntyre posted a top ten finish at golf’s ’fifth Major’ as he claimed ninth spot in the coveted Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
On a course the leftie previously said didn’t suit his game, a superb four days saw him lurking near the top of the leaderboard from the outset.
His superb showing follows on from a gutsy tie for 11th in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill last week and sets him up perfectly as he prepares for The Masters at Augusta.
The 28-year-old signed off with a three-under-par 69 on the Stadium Course at the Ponte Vedra Beach venue to finish with an eight-under score, just four off the winning score.
He described his upturn in form as the result of a ’solid two weeks’.
He: “Solid two weeks on the road finished off at The Players.
“To be walking away from both weeks happy enough with the performance but knowing there is still loads of room for improvement is satisfying.”
Bob was perfectly poised to challenge going into Sunday after opening rounds of 69, 70 and 72 that included some quality golf shots. However an opening bogey at the first on the final 18 holes seemed to set him on his heels before four birdies on the closing nine shot him up the leaderboard and into a top ten spot.
He will have been pleased with his overall game, especially his stats around the green and on the putting surface, where he ranked in the top 15 within the field.
The Glencruitten man is now en route to the Far East, where he is one of the star attractions in this week’s Porsche Singapore Classic on the DP World Tour.
He will then head to Oban for a short break before gearing up for an eagerly-anticipated first appearance in The Masters since 2022. It is a tournament the 28-year-old feels suits his game, with the set up of the course often noted for favouring left handed players.
After two stellar performances on the US PGA Tour against some of golf’s biggest stars, he will feel he can really mount a challenge for the green jacket.
