A talented young Australian footballer with Oban connections has received an international call up.
Brisbane Roar Football Club’s Quinn MacNicol has been selected by Australian head coach Brad Maloney for his 24-player squad featuring some of Australia’s brightest prospects.
The players, born in 2008 and 2009, will travel to Italy for an intensive two-week training camp as they begin their journey through a new qualification cycle.
Quinn is the son of Scott MacNicol, who played a number of games for Oban Saints when visiting Oban on holiday with his parents Brian and Barbara MacNicol, who had emigrated to Australia years ago.
Scott also played for Dunfermline Athletic and never fails to remind his Uncle Dougie Campbell, a former Saints’ legend, about the goal he scored against Celtic.
Quinn’s grandfather Brian was a skilful midfielder who played for the successful Dunstaffnage Football Club team, which operated in the now defunct Oban and District Football League.
The Australian squad – which includes five European-based players – will train at the Australian Institute of Sport European Training Centre in Varese, Italy, this month, and play two friendlies against Switzerland Under 16s and Inter Milan Football Club’s Under 17s. Quinn scored two goals for Australia in their 4-3 win over Switzerland.
Following extensive scouting and monitoring over the past 12 months, this will be the first camp Maloney, also a current Socceroos’ assistant coach, has arranged for this age group, as the youngsters look ahead to the Under 17 Asian Cup and the FIFA Under 17 World Cup to be held in Qatar.
April’s camp will be the first taste of a national team environment for this squad, as they begin their journey through Football Australia’s elite development pathway.
It is also the first time Football Australia has assembled a squad for the new cycle, following FIFA’s announcement that the FIFA Under 17 World Cup will become an annual event from 2025.
Maloney said he was eager to embark on a new journey to qualify for next year’s FIFA Under 17 World Cup with this group of players.
Quinn’s call up comes after he became the third youngest player to make his debut in the Australian A-League and the youngest goal-scorer in the Australia Cup in the 2023 season.
