Oban Lorne 10
Kilmarnock 43
West Division One
Oban Lorne put in a committed performance against league leaders Kilmarnock at the weekend, but the visitors showed their quality and clinical finishing to secure a convincing victory at Glencruitten.
The home side started well, with the first 20 minutes being a tightly contested battle.
Both teams defended strongly and Oban matched Kilmarnock’s intensity. However, the league leaders were first to break the deadlock, working the ball wide to score a well-structured try.
Oban responded well, applying sustained pressure before Calum MacLachlan powered over the line to bring the score level.
Kilmarnock then began to stretch the Oban defence, scoring two more tries before the break to take control of the game.
At half-time the match still felt competitive with both sides having plenty left in the tank.
Oban continued to battle in the second half, with Malcolm MacIntyre crossing the line to reduce the deficit, showing the home side’s attacking intent.
However, Kilmarnock’s cohesion and experience came through as they added more unanswered tries, showing their well-drilled structure in both attack and defence.
Despite the score line Oban were competitive for large spells of the game and showed moments of strong defence and attacking play.
The key differences lay in set-piece execution and overall attacking and defensive shape - areas the team will look to refine in training.
While the result did not go their way, there were positives to build on as the season continues.
