More than 120 pupils from Arran’s seven primary schools took part in the annual Scottish Dance Festival, colloquially known as the ’Day of Dance’.
Taking place at Whiting Bay village hall, the event is a celebration of Scottish country dancing and is enjoyed immensely by all the children who take part each year.
The ceremony began with the standard bearers’ parade where representatives from each school marched around the hall behind piper Gregor Gunaydi.
Assisted by teachers and friends from the Brodick country dance class, the children then took part in learning and performing eight Scottish country dances, including the Gay Gordons, St Bernard’s Waltz, A Highland Welcome, Military Two Step, Orcadian Strip the Willow and The Flying Scotsman.
Accordionist Ian Muir travelled to the island and provided the live music while Liz Kennedy was, once again, the master of ceremonies and the driving force behind making sure the event ran like clockwork. Active Schools co-ordinator Ross Dobson assisted with the logistical organising and helped throughout the day.
He said: “Fun physical activity is always a big hit with the children who have thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of Scottish country dancing with their friends and peers from other schools.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the help of several volunteers from friends of the Brodick Country Dance Class and the long-serving Liz Kennedy who is stalwart of the festival.
“Thank you to the school staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the pupils performed so well. A special thank you to Gregor Gunaydi who led our schools at the beginning of the festival and to accordionist Ian Muir for performing live music which makes such a difference and is a great experience for the pupils.”
After a fun-filled day of dancing, the traditional vote of thanks was made to Liz Kennedy, Ross Dobson and all the helpers, staff, children, friends and family for making the much-enjoyed day possible.
