Oban Lorne Ladies 73
Peterhead Ladies 0
National Shield (Women’s)
Oban Lorne Ladies welcomed Peterhead to Glencruitten on a beautiful sunny Saturday for the last group game in the National Shield competition.
Set to receive, Oban gained momentum quickly with good set plays and links between forwards and backs that saw the ball cross the line in the hands of Arden Binnie very far right on the wing. It was converted beautifully by Ellie MacInnes.
Some great footwork, and good link play and strong lines saw the backs break through at pace on several occasions, with Poppy McKillop, Rachael MacDonald, Heather Fothergill and MacInnes again tearing the park up and crossing the line.
Some good steals in line outs from Jordan MacIntyre and a few turnover scrums allowed Oban to regain possession.
The first half saw Oban dominate play in the main, and attack and defend well as a team, with some great runs and big hits, but on occasion made themselves work harder than necessary to keep Peterhead from scoring.
After quite a few penalties and some sloppy play Oban were sent back 10 quite a few times in quick succession. Back chatter with the ref resulted in a yellow card for Ellie Picken before half time.
Oban, with an impressive lead at half time (40-0), were given strong reminders from Coach Corrie Louw that discipline must improve in the second half and the team must work harder to ensure tackles are low and no penalties against.
The visitors were trying hard to get points on the board but Oban’s defence proved too strong.
The second half flowed well as Oban reduced errors and linked play well as a team.
There were tries for strong forward carriers Julie Campbell and Caitlin Fowler, and some big hits, good rucking skills and carries from Elaine Mitchell.
Once again Oban linked play well to get the ball out to the backs, who yet again tore through multiple defenders to add some more points to the board.
Peterhead sustained injury in the second half and both teams dropped to 14 players, with the result that the game was called early before 70 minutes.
Oban Lorne try scorers: Poppy McKillop (3), Rachael MacDonald (2), Ellie MacInnes (2), Arden Binnie, Heather Fothergill, Caitlin Fowler, Julie Campbell.
Ellie MacInnes converted nine tries displaying amazing kicking skills throughout the game.
Forward of the Match - Lindsay MacMillan; Back of the Match - Heather Fothergill; Peterhead Player of the Match - Julie Campbell.
Oban now progress to the quarter-final stages of the competition on Sunday March 23 when they will play the winners of Group D (tbc) away.
