Mallaig marathon man Pawel Cymbalista returned to record breaking ways on Saturday February 15 when he completed a winter West Highland Way (supported) in 19 hours 30 minutes and nine seconds.
This is the third time the 37-year-old father of two has completed the 154km course, which incorporates 4,200m of elevation, and in doing so he beat the former supported winter FKT (fastest known time) set by Andy Campbell last year.
He already holds the supported summer record of 17:57:35, which he set in 2022 and also came fourth in the WHW Race in 2023.
Speaking about his latest challenge las week, Pawel said: "I like to start the year with a big challenge and without a doubt it was.
"The weather was kind to me most of the time. I had a couple of snow showers and towards the end the wind started to pick up, increasing the wind chill.
"The temperature was around -2°C but the wind was going right through my body making it feel much colder."
Pawel’s team consisted of brother-in-law Ryan, Scott Brown from SBF Gym Irvine, wife Ashley navigating the social media, Monty, Ben Miller, Ruairdh Oliver-Jones from Lochaber Athletic Club, Stuart Malcolm and Manny Gorman from Carnethy Athletic Club, and Coalin Finn.
Anything longer than a five-minute break when stopping at a check point to refuel resulted in a drop in body temperature which Pawel found difficult to control, but he managed to stay on top of it for most of the way.
"The biggest challenge was the cold wind, ice and frozen rocks on higher grounds that required constant 100 per cent focus, keeping my head in the game, focusing on eating and drinking plenty so my body had the fuel to create energy to regulate my body temperature," he explained.
"The hardest section for me was the last 11km of Loch Lomond, from Inversnaid to Beinglas, where I couldn’t find a good rhythm.
"It was very frustrating and I was slowly loosing focus, but more runnable sections came next and I started to get my composure and faith back.
My team worked very hard to keep my spirits up. We chatted, we shared stories and we enjoyed our time out on the trails."
There was many sections of the WHW that Pawel managed to run in his own record time: Milngavie to Inverarnan; Bridge of Orchy to Glencoe Mountain Resort and then to Kinlochleven.
With no issues about running in the dark, Pawel felt good. And then.....
"I was on the last leg from Kinlochleven to Fort William and I rolled my right ankle on a rock twisting my body and putting a lot of pressure on my right hamstring and lower back.
"This caused a lot of discomfort and unusual pain. After I quickly snapped out of it I kept moving but noticed that my body started slightly twisting towards the right side and my right hamstring was tensing up slowing me down.
"I had 16km (10 miles to go) to Fort William. I had to grind it out. I was very focused on my body and trying to keep everything aligned so I would not cause more damage.
"I was chasing the clock as well. I knew I could grab the record if I just keep pushing it. It was a real fight and I made it. Thanks to my support team who never gave up on me and pushed me to the end."
Through his many years of challenges and pushing himself on long distances, Pawel has realised that it is important to respect his body and to look after it.
"I am planning to keep doing this as long as I can," he concluded.
"It’s the way of life I choose to have. I am a hard worker, a son, a husband, a father, an ultra running coach and an athlete. I share stories, I teach people how to be better every day.
"I have big dreams and ideas of what I would like to achieve. One day it will stop and I will have all the memories to pass onto my grandchildren and everyone that wants to listen."
Pawel’s WHM run was part of a bigger project to jumpstart his ultra running year.
