Arran Ladies hockey team travelled to Anniesland in Glasgow on Saturday for a much rearranged match against the young ladies of Glasgow High Kelvinside (GHK) VI.
Coach and match captain, Lorraine Hewie as centre forward, led a full team onto the pitch with junior club players, Stella Brassano-Cassinino and Eva Curley, providing the other two attacking forwards. Mia Walker stepped in as centre mid and Kayla Hewie was right mid. Sisters Hannah and Megan McCartney, who are at university in Glasgow, joined the team as left mid and right back respectively. Also in defence, Pauline Reid was left back, Kaitlyn Haddow was centre back and Lee Reid was sweeper. Suzi Haddow was the goalkeeper. Team captain Lynda Fenton was able to join the team in the second quarter after she came straight from the airport to the game.
From the first whistle Lorraine and Mia made a formidable duo. Sweeping passed the midfield and defensive players, they were in the shooting “D” with Lorraine putting Arran on the scoreboard in under five minutes. Following this, with great passing from Mia and her fellow midfielders, Lorraine ‘Hurricane’ Hewie racked up a hat-trick of goals with superb ball control and rocket shots into the goal before the quarter whistle blew.
The home team stayed strong in the second quarter and the score remained at three-nil to Arran at half-time, but they did convert a short corner penalty into a goal with a well rehearsed set piece of stick work after returning to the pitch for the second half. However, a few minutes later Mia returned the favour. Receiving the ball from Lorraine, at the top of the “D”, she hit the ball with tremendous force where it shot through the defenders and keeper and into the back of the net.
Coming back in the final quarter the Arran defence found themselves under pressure from the young attacking centre forward who took the ball from the halfway line all the way to the top of Arran’s goal zone and fired a cross angle ball at the goal. It hit the far corner post and deflected in. It was such a super performance that her teammates, and even some Arran players, congratulated her. Lorraine followed this play with another charge back towards the opposition goal area. With young Eva in place to collect the ball passed up from Kayla in mid-field, she bypassed her defender and got a cracking pass over to Lorraine who, once again, rewarded the team effort by smacking the ball into the net. Still the home team stayed determined and scored the last goal of the game, bringing the final score to 5-3 to Arran. Lorraine led the three cheers from the Arran Ladies, acknowledging a game well played by everyone.
Back on the ferry, Pauline counted the nominations for dame of the game and let the team know that Mia had won it for her excellent performance in midfield. She also let the team know that Lorraine had been voted player of the match for her excellent attacking play by the GHK team.
The Arran Ladies were meant to play a double-header with another match on Sunday, however, their opponents, Clydesdale Western, conceded their game as they were unable to field a team.
The next fixture for the Arran Ladies will be another away game this Saturday in Milngavie against the Western Wildcats IV’s. Push back is 10.30am. Supporters at the games are always welcome and very much appreciated by the team.
