In a dramatic re-match, Arran Ladies Hockey Team welcomed the team from Dumfries Hockey Club on Saturday February 22 at home on the Ormidale pitch.
Captain Lynda Fenton led a full squad onto the pitch with team coach Lorraine Hewie, Anne Watts, and Eirlys Bowen as the attacking forwards.
Lynda was joined in midfield by Mia Walker and Susie Murchie. Cat Galbraith stepped into as goalkeeper as Suzi Haddow was on the mainland.
Cat had Lee Reid, Helen Thomson, Kaitlyn Haddow and Dawn Lyle as her defensive line. Pauline Reid and Marie Craig were the two umpires for the match.
Lynda had a further five substitute players to provide fresh legs throughout the game in Del Jones, Karen McGrath, Connie Watts, Stella Brunasso-Cassinino and Kayla Hewie.
Having narrowly lost to the visitors when they travelled to Dumfries in October, the Arran Ladies knew this would be a challenging match.
But Lorraine wasted little time in putting Arran well in to the lead, with great support and wonderful passing from Anne and Eirlys, she racked up her first hat-trick of goals in under 15 minutes. Hurricane Hewie was back!
Mia finished off the first quarter with a cracking run from the sideline into the shooting “D” and slotting the ball passed the Dumfries defenders and keeper to bring Arran 4-nil up.
Coming on in the second quarter the Dumfries forwards were able to put heavy pressure on the Arran defence.
Cat saved many attempts, but her high ball save was awesome to see when she blocked a shot on line for the top right had corner of the net with her stick then kicked the ball back into play – fabulous eye to hand co-ordination!
Dumfries did score their first goal in the quarter but Del followed it with a swift sprint up the pitch to catch a superb pass from Lorraine and smacking the ball into the goal.
Returning for the second half, Del then took the Arran Ladies further into the lead when she scored in the first minute and then again when she received a lovely little switch pass from junior club player, Connie Watts, in the opposition “D”.
Trapping the ball Del flicked it passed the goalkeeper once again, giving her a hat-trick of goals too.
Stella, also from the Junior Hockey Club, got herself on the score sheet when she collected a great pass from Del, kept her nerve and cool as the keeper rushed towards her, and pushed the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to great cheers from her teammates and the Arran supporters.
Lorraine finished off the quarter with an excellent twisting run through the Dumfries defence and shooting for goal.
However the keeper saved the shot but Lorraine was on her to dig the ball out from her feet, sidestep round her and finish off her attack by flicking the ball into the goal.
Two goals apiece were scored by each team in the later half of the final quarter, with Lorraine demonstrating great stick skills, ball control and accurate shooting, achieving a double hat-trick and taking the team to an impressive 11-3 win.
Stella was awarded Dame of the Game by her team for her superb play and scoring her goal and Lynda was nominated as Player of the Match by the opposition for her great play in mid-field.
Special praise also went to the midfield for keeping the ball away from the Arran goal area, thanks to their tackling, skilful ball control, and passing.
Marie and Pauline were thanked by the team for umpiring the match.
Next Saturday, March 1, will see the Arran Ladies travel to Glasgow to play Uddingston IV’s. Push back is noon and any supporters who can come along to cheer on the team will be much appreciated and warmly welcome.
