National Plate (Women’s)
In a thrilling match at Banavie, the Lochaber Rugby Club Ladies team delivered an outstanding performance, claiming a 33-5 victory over East Kilbride in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Both teams showcased grit, determination and impressive rugby skills in a game packed with powerful defence and exhilarating attacks.
Lochaber set the tone early with winger Ailsa Graham marking a memorable moment by scoring her first try for the team.
East Kilbride quickly mounted a counter attack, crossing the try line with intent but Lochaber’s defence held firm, preventing the visitors from grounding the ball.
The home side capitalised on this defensive stand with Mairi Duncan breaking through to extend the lead. Emily Brown’s clinical conversion made it 12-0.
Not long after, Lyndsay Waterson carved through East Kilbride’s defence with a brilliant solo run bringing the score to 17-0 and taking Lochaber into half-time with a commanding lead.
Lochaber’s dominance continued into the second half, with Melissa Cardosi powering over the line. Emily’s precision kicking added the extras and soon after Eilidh Towers added to the scoreline with a try of her own followed by another superb conversion by Emily.
To their credit, East Kilbride fought valiantly and displayed remarkable resilience throughout the match. Their persistence paid off in the dying minutes when a well-co-ordinated attack resulted in a hard-earned try - a moment worthy of applause from both sets of supporters.
The final whistle sealed a 33-5 victory for Lochaber with Emily’s kicking and the team’s cohesive play earning them a well-deserved win.
Lochaber’s head coach Naomi Duncan praised the team’s performance: “It was a fantastic effort from everyone.
“Ailsa’s first try was a standout moment and the entire squad showed real heart on the pitch.”
The win solidifies Lochaber’s growing reputation as a force to be reckoned with and they will be looking to carry this momentum into their next match in the round robin stages of the Plate competition - an away tie next Sunday, February 2, facing off against Dundee Valkyries 2nd XV.
