Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup semi finals
Oban Camanachd 4
Inveraray 0
Holders Oban Camanachd are back in the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup final after they beat Inveraray 4-0 in their 1pm throw-up at Mossfield.
Former club captain James MacMillan made his first Oban Camanachd start since 2016, whilst Daniel MacVicar returned after missing the previous week’s win over Newtonmore. Gregor MacDonald was unavailable and Ross Campbell missed out with a thigh injury.
The Oban side also learned that Scottish international Blair MacFarlane’s return, after completing the rugby season with Oban Lorne, will be delayed after he suffered a dislocated ankle.
A great Daniel MacVicar shot from 30 yards was heading for the top corner of the net, but Inveraray keeper Scott MacLachlan pulled off an equally great save.
Full centre Daniel MacCuish pushed forward from midfield to good effect on the half hour and when a rebound broke for MacCuish, he slipped the ball by the keeper to open the scoring.
Ross Macmillan and Daniel Cameron replaced Malcolm Clark and Daniel MacVicar at half-time, with Cameron going to the top of what was now a diamond formation.
Ross Macmillan added Oban Camanachd’s second goal on 59 minutes, after good play from Matthew Sloss. Macmillan finished with a turn and swing into the middle of the goals from 20 yards out on the right.
Ross Macmillan got his second 10 minutes later, this time producing a quick finish from the edge of the ‘D’ on the right.
Ross Macmillan completed his hat-trick three minutes into stoppage time to make the final score 4-0.
Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans said: “It was a beautiful day with a big crowd and the pitch was perfect, but we were awful in the first half, extremely poor. Too many players were expecting something to happen instead of making it happen and we didn’t get going all over the park.
“We made a couple of changes at half-time, one being Ross Macmillan’s introduction and he’s different class when focused and deserved his hat-trick.
“We were far better in the second half. That said, we have to stop making a passive start to games.
“Daniel Madej and Ross Macmillan were our top performers. Credit to Inveraray who are a better side than I perhaps thought they were.”
This Saturday, Oban Camanachd, sponsored by TSL Contractors, are back at Mossfield where they play Newtonmore in the second round of the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup. The sides met in a league match at the same venue a fortnight ago when the Oban side won 2-1.
Gareth Evans added: “Ross Macmillan’s performances over the last two weekends have given us something to think about. We took Louie Macfarlane off for Alexander MacDonald as a precaution to protect his knee on Saturday, but I think he’ll be okay, whilst Gregor MacDonald will be back and probably Garry Lord too.”
Earlier in the day, Lochside Rovers welcome the Inveraray second team in the Bullough Cup quarter finals.
Kyles Athletic 3
Glasgow Mid Argyll 1
After extra time
Kyles Athletic will play Oban Camanachd in the final after they overcame Glasgow Mid Argyll (GMA) 3-1 after extra time at Tighnabruaich.
Kyles Athletic’s Andrew King is likely to miss another couple of weeks yet with a hamstring injury, but Conor Kennedy returned and Will Cowie was able to take a place on the bench.
GMA’s John McNulty and Gary Luke were still out with leg injuries, but Calum McLay was fit to play.
After a goal-less first half, GMA led through Craig Anderson on 62 minutes.
Kyles brought Will Cowie off the bench and David Zavaroni levelled on 68 minutes. With no further scoring, referee Graham Fisher took the tie to extra time.
Luke Thornton put Kyles ahead for the first time on 97 minutes and Ross Macrae rounded off the 3-1 win on 115 minutes to send Kyles through.
Kyles player/coach Roddy Macdonald said: “That was a difficult game in the heat. GMA were up for it and started well. We came more into it later on and I thought we deserved to win.
“It was good to see Will Cowie return after not playing since March. He made a difference when he came on and we are getting bodies back so can hopefully kick on from here.
“We look forward to the final against Oban Camanachd.”
