The second week of the Annual Regatta Fortnight at Plockton began on August 5.
After early rain, and contrary to the forecast, the weather was lovely for sailing.
In the afternoon, three centreboards sailed in the Novice’s Race for the Auchwurin Rose Bowl: 1 Duncan Sweeney, Lazer; 2 Calum Hay, Die Forelle; 3 Orla Fergusson, Toot Toot.
In the evening, the third Plockton Trophy Race had 11 starters in lovely conditions: 1 David Hay, Coruisk; 2 Alexander Tindall, Seaforth; 3 Michael Hay, Nan.
With one race to go, the Seaforth and Spindrift were leading with three points.
The fourth Ulluva Cup and first Sgeir Bhuide Race for Centreboards had only three starters: 1 James Smith, Inominate; 2 Tom Taylor-Jones, White Mischief II; 3 Donald Gillies, Too Do Loo Too.
On Tuesday morning, three Toppers completed three races for the Fossil Trophy: 1 Calum Hay, four points; 2 Duncan Sweeney, five points; 3 James Fraser, nine points.
Winds freshened in the afternoon and the Melora Cup for novices was called off.
In the evening, nine local boats sailed for the Ex-Commodores Tray: 1 Michael Hay, Nan, by 56 seconds; 2 Neil MacRae, Rona; 3 Malcolm Mackenzie, Taeping.
The fifth Ulluva Cup Race for Centreboards also took place: 1 James Smith; 2 Tom Tayor-Jones.
On Wednesday, gales meant no sailing all day.
On Thursday, the Commodore arranged three races to complete the fortnight.
The first race in the morning was the Johnnie Ruari Tray for local boats, youths. Three boats sailed, only two boats finished: 1 Imogen Smith, Rona; 2 Alasdair Stewart, Taeping. Imogen won it last year and came from Manchester to return the Tray. However, she borrowed the Rona again and won.
The second race was the Melora Cup for novices in local boats, four started: 1 Grant Sabin, Spindrift, by 19 seconds; 2 Calum Hay, Nan. Owing to the calm conditions, only two finished.
In the evening, the fourth and final race for the Plockton Trophy and Fred Allen Galleon, for second place, was run.
This was combined with the RNLI race. Conditions were calm and wet and there were 12 starters - nine local boats and three centreboards: 1 Alexander Tindall, Seaforth; 2 Michael Hay, Nan; 3, David Hay, Coruisk.
At the end of the four races, Seaforth won the Plockton Trophy with four points. Runner-up and winner of the Fred Allen Galleon was Spindrift with seven points; 3 Coruisk, 8 points; 4 Nan, 8 points.
It was also the sixth and final race for the Ulluva Cup and third Sgeir Bhuidhe Cup for centreboards: 1 James Smith, Inominate; 2 Donald Gillies, Too Do Loo Too II; 3 Tom Taylor-Jones, White Mischief II.
Ulluva Cup: 1 James Smith, 10 points; 2 Tom Taylor-Jones, 11 points; 3 Graham Sharp, 20 points.
Sgeir Bhuide Cup: 1 James Smith; 2 Tom Taylor-Jones; 3 Donald Gilies.
Winner of the RNLI Shield: 1 James Smith; 2 Donald Gillies; 3 Alexander Tindall.
On Friday, gale force winds forced the cancellation of the fishing competition but Plockton Hall was packed for the concert and prizegiving in the evening.
Chairman was Andrew Hamilton, brother of the commodore, and prizes were presented by Douglas Hamilton, father of the commodore.
Commodore Laura Anderson announced the winner of the Junior Endeavor Cup was Jacob Reilly with the Starminx Starters Cup going to Neil MacRae, Rona.
The dance which followed was well attended, with music by Alec Mackenzie and his band.
On Saturday morning, the weather abated to allow the children’s Ragamuffin Race to go ahead with seven starters, one more than last year. Twenty nine children took part: 1, Alasdair Tindall, Seaforth; 2 Josh Rowe, Spindrift; 3 Calum Hay, Nan.
Prizes were also presented for the best sails. Afterwards, the usual dancing outside the Plockton Hotel was enjoyed by a large crowd.
With three more local boats than last year, the club was delighted, however, the lack of centreboards was a concern.
