Lochgilphead Red Star 2
Eddlewood 3
GGP AFL - Division 3
SJB Builders sponsored Red Star succumbed to their first home defeat of the league season on Saturday having surrendered a half time lead when they should really have been out of sight.
The home side looked to get on the front foot early and had opportunities to take the lead when Stuart MacLean was in on goal but an uncharacteristic heavy touch saw the chance go begging before Rhys Casci saw an effort cleared off the line.
The breakthrough did come for Star after 20 minutes when Angus Lewis headed home from close range after Eddlewood struggled to deal with a corner.
Star continued to press towards half time and should have added to their lead when Rhys Casci managed to round the keeper, however, the ball wouldn’t drop to the new signing’s preferred left foot and Eddlewood were able to clear their lines.
Into the second half and Star knew a second goal would be crucial and when it didn’t arrive there was a familiar inevitability when Eddlewood found the equaliser with 20 minutes to go.
This time it was the home side who failed to clear their lines from a corner and the Eddlewood number four, who had an excellent game, headed home.
The visitors’ tails were up now and once again Star shot themselves in the foot when Ruariadh Green’s cross field pass was intercepted and the Eddlewood midfielder managed to beat keeper Struan Urquhart with a well placed strike to put the visitors 1-2 up.
Eddlewood looked to have made the game safe with 10 minutes remaining when they added a third as Star once again failed to clear their lines from a cross ball to make it 1-3.
Star gave themselves a late lifeline when Callum Green finished smartly from close range after being set up by Rhys Casci with five minutes to go.
The home side looked to grab a leveller late on but were denied by a great save from the Eddlewood goalkeeper following Casci’s powerful effort from the edge of the box.
“It was a disappointing result given how dominant we were in the first half, however, we are paying the price at the moment for not being clinical in both boxes,” said a spokesperson for Star.
On Saturday October 19, Red Star face a tough test as they welcome early season title favourites Campsie to Lochgilphead Joint Campus; the game kicks off at 2pm.
