Last Sunday Mid Argyll Women travelled to Dalkeith Ladies RFC for the second game of the National Bowl competition.
Unfortunately the team travelled with reduced numbers of just 11 due to call offs, injuries and other commitments.
This didn’t dampen the squad’s spirits as the team was thankfully bolstered by new players Kylie McMullan, Eilidh Mackay, Rhona O’May and Libby Smith, who all brought something to the overall performance.
Playing 11 v 11, the first half was difficult for the ladies after the long trip and reshuffled squad and they took time to settle into the game.
Unfortunately, there were no scores for the Mid Argyll side, while Dalkeith, boasting a full squad, had no such issues and with a few line breaks they took the score to 52-0 at halftime.
During the break the ladies decided the next score would be theirs - and sure enough, Iona Campbell saw an opportunity through the defensive line and scored Mid Argyll’s first try of the game right under the posts. Campbell then kicked the conversion bringing the scoreboard to 52-7.
Mid Argyll got into a rhythm after that score, putting up a strong fight against a well-drilled Dalkeith side, who managed a few more tries before the Mid Argyll ladies put immense pressure on them, fighting to get over the try line.
The hard work paid off as Kylie McMullan secured the second score on the left wing, bringing the tally to 83-12.
Soon after, off the back off Dalkeith’s scrum in their 22, Kirsty Gibson saw an opportunity and intercepted the pass before bulldozing through three players and driving herself over the try line right under the posts. Another conversion from Campbell took the score to 83-19.
The larger squad was really showing now for the home side and, as they rolled subs on and off, the Mid Argyll ladies dug deep to compete. Every one of them played the entire game and fought with real determination.
The home side secured the victory with the final score at 102-19 however, Mid Argyll were full of positivity after the game, knowing they had put 100 per cent in on the pitch for the full 80 minutes and had done themselves and the club proud.
The coaches, Drew Buckley and Fionn Doherty, expressed a special thank you to all players who made the trip and especially the three making their debuts for the club. They look forward to seeing them back on the pitch with the team soon.
There were real positives to take from this game and the score doesn’t reflect the effort put in by everyone.
A huge thank you was given to Dalkeith for hosting the team and for their great hospitality, also a big thank you to the referee.
The coaches ’Fyne Ales Player Of The Match’ was awarded to Rhona O’May for her positive attitude throughout the game.
This was Rhona’s first time playing since high school and she was a massive moral boost for the whole team and gave it her all. The coaches couldn’t have asked for more.
Dalkeith chose Kylie McMullan as Player Of The Match, who worked tirelessly to make every tackle she could, chase every player who made a break, and contribute to great attacking runs as well.
The ladies now look forward to their next game, at home, on March 23 against Lasswade RFC, KO 2pm.
