Lochaber RFC 71
Glasgow University Medics 0
West Division 3
Lochaber senior men’s rugby team consolidated their position atop West Division 3 with a comprehensive victory over second-placed Glasgow University Medics.
Forced to play 12-a-side as a result of the Medics’ low numbers, the fired up Banavie men ran in 11 unanswered tries and eight conversions to strengthen their grip on the league title.
The boys in black and gold set off at a furious pace, winger Koni Johnson finishing a series of powerful runs from the forwards to get on the board with the first possession.
This trend continued for the next two possessions, with full back Stuart Hinchcliffe and number eight Conor Taylor continuing their fine league try scoring form.
With total scrum dominance, Hinchcliffe and Taylor grabbed their second scores, Hinchcliffe’s in particular catching the eye following a fine backs move.
Prop Josh MacKay stepped up to score next with a short range burst to finish off a quick penalty move.
Centre Callum Boyd then punched a hole through the Medics’ defence to add Lochaber’s seventh try of the day.
Finishing the half as it began, Johnson grabbed his second score to bring up 50 points for the home side, who proceeded to make wholesale changes at half time to give the squad some game time before the important West Bowl Final on February 15.
Shortened due to waning numbers in the Medics side, the hosts scored three more tries in the second half, with Boyd grabbing his second score, flanker Liam Ryan finishing in the corner and winger Davy Duncan dotting down under the posts.
By the time stand off Ryan Davies had slotted his eighth conversion of the day, the score was 71-0 to the home side.
Having played two home games in 2025, scoring more than 200 points and conceding none, Lochaber travel to Moffat for the West Bowl Final on Saturday February 15 in fine form.
Moffat will provide a stern test, but with silverware on the line as well as entry to the National Bowl competition, the Banavie boys are sure to be up for the fight.
