Kyles Athletic 4 Oban Camanachd 5
Oban Camanachd displayed their battling qualities as they twice came from two goals down to beat south rivals Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich.
Andrew King was back in the Kyles Athletic line-up after retiring from senior shinty at the end of last season. Ross Macrae returned following illness, but Roddy Macdonald was unavailable.
Oban Camanachd’s Ross Macmillan was available again following his 4-match ban, but Louie MacFarlane was out with a hamstring injury whilst injury restricted Andy MacDonald to a place on the bench.
Kyles made a flying start with James Pringle putting them ahead after just 45 seconds and Scott Macdonald adding a second on 7 minutes.
Lorne Dickie pulled a goal back on 22 minutes, running from the wing to score following a free-hit and when the ball broke to Ross Macmillan, his shot skipped over former Oban Celtic keeper Iain MacFarlane in the home goal to make it 2-2.
However, Kyles again opened up a two-goal cushion, scoring twice over just two minutes. The visitors were punished for not clearing their lines with a second from Scott Macdonald on 36 minutes and a Roan MacVicar goal a minute after and Kyles now led 4-2.
However, when Andrew King fell by the ball inside the D on 41 minutes, referee Des McNulty, who handled the game well in difficult circumstances, awarded a penalty and Daniel MacVicar made no mistake, rifling the ball into the top corner of the goal.
Kyles were then awarded a penalty when Andy MacDonald was penalised for a trip but Cammy Sutherland saved with his feet to deny Ross Macrae.
When Ross Campbell’s shot was blocked by Andrew King on 66 minutes, Malcolm Clark was on hand to make it 4-4 with a good strike.
Iain MacFarlane made a great save from Ross Macmillan’s volley before Macmillan was replaced by Joe MacVicar for what was the youngster’s Oban Camanachd debut.
That’s the way it remained until five minutes from time when Joe MacVicar played on a hit-in to his brother Daniel MacVicar who scooped the ball into the D. Malcolm Clark was first to react and he beat the keeper to the ball and knocked it home to win the game. However, the goal came at a cost as Clark was caught by the keeper’s swing and was later confirmed to have suffered a broken thumb in two places.
Looking back on an eventful afternoon, Oban Camanachd assistant manager Iain MacMillan said: “That was a crazy game.
“We scored in the first minute the previous week but lost a goal in the first minute on Saturday. It was good to get the game on, but the conditions underfoot were difficult – muddy and sticky - and Kyles adjusted to them quicker than we did, as you would expect with it being their home pitch.
“We just couldn’t get going and looked asleep at times.
“Scott Macdonald caused us problems, but Andy MacDonald did well against him when he came on.
“Cammy Sutherland couldn’t do much about any of the goals and we said at half-time that it wasn’t good enough and the forwards had kept us in the game. Daniel MacVicar’s penalty score just before half-time was really important, it was huge, as we wouldn’t have wanted to go into the break two goals down.
“In fact, Daniel played a captain’s part throughout, and I think he was involved in all our goals.
“We made changes at the break with Andy MacDonald and Scott MacMillan coming on and that helped.
“We were really good up front, where the forwards never panicked, and we seemed to have success through periods of sustained pressure.
“We had to dig in and battle for it, but it was great to get both points.”
Oban Camanachd return to league action on Saturday against Skye Camanachd at Mossfield. Iain MacMillan added: “We are obviously going to miss Malcolm Clark, but Andy MacDonald came through Saturday unscathed and Louie MacFarlane has a chance of featuring.”
Kyles Athletic travel north to Caberfeidh.
Mowi National Division
Lochaber 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1
Lochaber are early Mowi National Division leaders after defeating title rivals Glasgow Mid Argyll at Spean Bridge.
Max Campbell got Lochaber off to a great start, scoring from the right after just 2 minutes when Ben Delaney played him in following a hit-in from the right.
Ben Delaney added a second on 11 minutes, turning his marker and finishing into the net from distance.
GMA pulled a goal back through Finlay Ralston on 35 minutes, beating the keeper at his right post when Lochaber failed to clear a corner.
Ben Delaney got his second on 40 minutes, crashing the ball high by the goalie after Lochaber had smartly worked the ball up their left side.
Stuart Callison rounded off the 4-1 win with just 4 minutes to go, turning home a rebound from the left after Jonathan Oates had saved Ben Delaney’s initial shot.
Next up for Lochaber is a league meeting with Bute at The Meadows on Saturday whilst Glasgow Mid Argyll host Kilmallie.
Inveraray 2 Glenurquhart 3
Youngster Daniel MacLean grabbed a hat-trick as Glenurquhart won against Inveraray at The Winterton.
There was a quick exchange of goals midway through the first half as Fraser Watt scored twice for the hosts on 22 and 25 minutes, either side of Daniel MacLean’s goal for the Glen on 23 minutes to have the home side 2-1 ahead at the interval.
Glen’s Daniel MacLean completed his hat-trick with strikes on 65 and 79 to give his side a 3-2 triumph.
Inveraray are at home again this weekend as they have a league meeting with Strathglass at The Winterton whilst Glenurquhart welcome Col Glen.
Kilmallie 3 Col Glen 5
Col Glen took the points with a 5-3 win over Kilmallie at The Canal Parks.
Kilmallie struck first through Ben MacKinnon on 5 minutes, but Neily Mcnaughton scored the first of his afternoon’s goals on 12 minutes.
Col Glen led through Sam Bulloch on 27 minutes, but Calum MacDougall made it 2-2 just 5 minutes later.
It was Kilmallie who got their noses in front at the break as Shane O’Rua netted on 44 minutes.
Neily Mcnaughton then took over, taking his count to four goals with efforts on 55, 57 and 61 minutes to give Col Glen their first win of the season.
Kilmallie travel to Glasgow Mid Argyll in the league on Saturday whilst Col Glen are off to Glenurquhart.
Strathglass 1 Bute 2
Bute took the points after beating Strathglass at Cannich.
Rory McDonald put the Islanders ahead on 15 minutes and Scott Harvey made it 2-0 35 minutes. Penri Jones gave the Strath’ hope with 15 minutes remaining but it wasn’t enough.
Mowi South Division 1
Oban Celtic lead Mowi South Division 1 on goal difference after beating Ardnamurchan at Ganavan.
There was an even start to the game but Celtic soon got on top and were rewarded with the afternoon’s first goal after 25 minutes from centre man Gabriel Tidser.
Celtic would have been further ahead by half-time but for some great goalkeeping and some wayward finishing.
The second half was just a couple of minutes old when George MacMillan made it 2-0 and this seemed to settle the Oban side, and they cruised through the remainder of the second period.
Further goals followed from Kyle MacFarlane on 65 minutes, William MacEwan on 74 minutes, Daniel MacMillan on 77 minutes and a second from Kyle MacFarlane on 85 minutes completed the win with MacFarlane taking his tally to 5 goals from the opening 2 games.
Oban Celtic’s Cammy Mccallum said: “It was a great performance from everyone.
“Our defence gave virtually nothing away with only a couple of late efforts on our goal whilst we also scored some good goals.
“Gabriel Tidser in the centre line was outstanding, controlling the game and also getting our first goal.”
Lochside Rovers only trail their Oban rivals on goal difference after beating the Inveraray juniors 6-0 at Mossfield.
Lochside were without Calum Campbell, but Jamie Anderson played after being in the Oban Camanachd squad the previous week. Ross MacKay played in goals, replacing the injured John MacKenzie.
Skipper Lewis Buchanan gave the keeper no chance with the opening goal on 16 minutes and Jordan Kerr doubled Lochside’s advantage on 24 minutes when his low shot deceived the keeper.
Referee Cat Whyte pointed to the penalty spot when Lewis Buchanan was chopped down inside the D on 42 minutes and Buchanan dusted himself down to blast the spot-hit home.
Lochside Rovers scored twice in two minutes following the restart to go out of sight. A cracking strike from Cameron MacMillan went low into the net to make it 4-0 on 46 minutes and just a minute later, and substitute Callum Kirsop finished well when the ball broke to him inside the D.
With just eight minutes remining, the ball was played in high to Jordan Kerr and he took the ball down before turning and firing into the top corner of the net to add the sixth.
Lochside Rover assistant manager Duncan MacMillan said: “It was nip and tuck for the first 15 minutes and Inveraray fielded some good youths along with the likes of Garry MacPherson at half back and David Robertson providing the experience. The final score was probably harsh on them.
“Lewis Buchanan’s penalty settled us down nicely and by the time the fourth and fifth goals went in, the game went a bit flat.
“Jamie Anderson played well for us as did Iain Duffy at half back. Ross MacKay did the basics very well, making a couple of neat saves with his feet. Callum Kirsop is working 3-weeks on and off and he’s another big plus when available.”
There’s an Oban Derby this weekend as Oban Celtic meet Lochside Rovers in the league at Ganavan. The sides are the only two in the division with maximum points from their opening two games, so something has to give.
Duncan MacMillan added: “Oban Celtic are playing well and if both sides play to their capabilities, this could be a cracker.
“The game won’t define our season, but we want to win.”
Aberdour and Kilmory shared the points following their goalless draw at Silversands.
Ballachulish were unable to field a team for their game against the Glasgow Mid Argyll juniors at Peterson Park. Balla’ have been docked two points and the game will be rescheduled.
Mowi South Division 2
Uddingston were 4-0 winners against the Aberdour second team at The Stepps Playing Fields. Aberdour travelled with just eleven players, including two debutants new to the game. Connor Little put the hosts ahead in the opening minute and they eventually pushed further ahead through Gavin MacLeod on 59 minutes, Lee Thomson on 64 minutes and Zack Ritchie who netted just 10 minutes from time.
The meeting between the Bute juniors and Tayforth was postponed due to an unplayable field at The Meadows.
