Organisers of the Phoenix Cup, the international team event for disabled golfers, the Phoenix Group has relaunched as a social group.
Formally Scottish Disability Golf, the newly launched group has been expanded and will continue to host the cup event, based on the Ryder / Solheim Cup formats, which will take place this September at Phoenix, Arizona.
Following the European team win over the USA at the 30th Phoenix Cup over the new, old and jubilee golf courses at St Andrews last October, the Phoenix Group has been invited to the new Disability Golf Teaching HUB sessions at St Andrews and several other venues.
Jim Gales MBE, the captain of the winning European team at St Andrews said, “This ties in lovely with the conclusion of our own programme of lessons with PGA teaching professionals, as we have just reached the 5,000th, 30-minute lesson being provided to our members.
“Our supporters have come along with us during our reorganisation and we have introduced a free membership scheme for golfers with disabilities and our first two-day event at the Dalmahoy Country Club in Edinburgh next month, is also free to members.”
Local Whiting Bay golfer, John Pennycott was one of the players who was part of last year’s winning European team. He has also competed in the cup in 2020, and in 2022 he was part of a 13-man team representing Scotland which won the Phoenix Cup.
The 31st Phoenix Cup, where team Europe hope to defend the trophy, will be played from September 20-23, at the Raven Golf Club in Phoenix Arizona. Graham Moore of Yorkshire will lead the squad of 19 selected players and coaches, from countries including: Belgium, Ireland, Scotland, Holland and Italy.
