Lochaber RFC 132
Isle of Mull RFC 0
West Division 3
Lochaber senior men’s rugby team continued their undefeated run in the league this season with a comprehensive, and potential Lochaber RFC league record score, in the home victory against an under-strength Isle of Mull RFC side, which deserves massive credit for travelling to make sure the game could go ahead.
The first competitive fixture since early November saw the Banavie men eager to get their season up and running and a keen squad assembled for the early kick-off to accommodate the ferry travel of the visitors.
What followed was no more than a training exercise for the hosts, played under the SRU Game On principles, in which Lochaber players made up the numbers to help Mull.
Thanks go to all the players who took a spell in the Mull shirt.
Lochaber took advantage of the space afforded them by Mull’s low numbers to run in 20 unanswered tries with ten different try scorers geting their names on the board.
Full back Stuart Hinchcliffe led the way with four tries, with winger Archie Campbell and prop Josh MacKay both weighing in with hat-tricks including scores run in from their own half.
Winger Davy Duncan, centre Koni Johnson and number eight Chris Simpson all contributed with a pair of tries each. Finally, centre Callum Boyd, second rows Callum MacDonald and Douglas MacRae and prop Liam Ryan completed the score sheet with a try a piece.
The game marked hooker Rory MacKay’s 250th game for the club.
A healthy boost to the score difference sees Lochaber remain atop of Arnold Clark West Division 3, one point ahead of Glasgow University Medics, having played a game less.
The Medics visit to Banavie in early February is looking increasingly like a league decider. This will immediately be followed by the West Bowl Cup Final in Moffat, marking February a big month in the men’s team season.
Next week sees the men’s team travel south to play Glasgow Raptors in the league on Saturday January 25 while the women’s team start their SRU National Plate campaign with a home match against East Kilbride RFC on Sunday 26.
The club would love a large home support to cheer on the women in their first home match since winning their league, so if you are able, please come along to Banavie on Sunday.
