As Fort William Football Club’s season begins to draw to a close, the team made sure they put themselves in a strong position for a top four finish with victory over nearest rivals Golspie Sutherland at Claggan Park, writes Peter Newman.
The teams had met only three weeks previously with that encounter endedingt 1-1 in a game both sides felt they could have taken more from.
Here, in the absence of manager Alan Gray, assistant manager Darren Duncan stepped up to take hold of the reins with long time club man John Treasurer returning to Claggan to lend a hand.
And it didn’t take long for the refreshed management team to get off the mark.
Bustling midfielder Juan Cordona lashed an absolute screamer beyond Leo Shearer in the visitor’s goal to open the afternoon’s scoring after 13 minutes.
Next on to the scoreboard, with just over half an hour played, was Mallaig man Andrew Sneddon who bagged his sixth finish of the term.
In the second half, Golspie continued to stick to their task and the tie began to look in the balance once midfielder Alfie Mackay sunk a penalty on the hour mark to make the game 2-1.
However, Fort William continued to play their game and, in the dying embers of the fixture, the side maintained its 100 per cent record in the absence of Gray as Cordona popped up again to bag his fourth finish of the season and put the game out of sight for the home side.
Assistant manager Darren Duncan said: “There was some really good football played on a tough pitch today.
“We made life difficult for ourselves in the second half as we were not clinical enough in the box meaning there’s always a chance of them getting back in the game, which they did.
“But we held out well and got the deserved win in the end.”
Fort William’s next fixture sees them heading to Inverness to take on Inverness Athletic on Saturday March 16. Kick-off 1pm.
